Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Tropical Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located within the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has built in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had entered into an deal to purchase the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.
Approximately 30% of the area is built upon, featuring a significant range of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
Hamilton's development boom initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background
The acquiring firm has ownership of hotels and luxury resorts in several countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
