The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
